Friedhof Magazine: Today we are premiering your new single “Sublimation“. Tell us more about it!
Panos Agoros: Greetings! It’s the self-titled track from our 4th album and its 2nd excerpt to be made public (the first being “Multiple-Dimension Descriptor”). Its lyrics deal with sci-fi author Iain M. Banks’ concept of Sublimation which has inspired its title, as well as being a unifying theme across most songs’ lyrics on the record. To sum up what this is all about: advanced civilizations who Sublime, are migrating from “the Real” to higher dimensions. The lyrics of the song are written in Greek, as well as approximately half of the lyrics of the album. Translations are provided online and in the CD/LP inlays.

Friedhof Magazine: The song is the title track for your fourth full-length. What direction is the music taking this time around?
Panos Agoros: We have our own style which is a blend of different genres of extreme and heavy music. Across our recordings for over a decade now, we have stuck to it and therefore are not the kind of band of which one should expect huge musical direction changes from one album to the other. However, this does not mean that we stagnate to a certain formula. There are changes in our sound, performance and songwriting but we’d rather have our audience, old and new alike, find out for themselves by listening the album.

Friedhof Magazine: What subject does the new album touch on? Does it have a concept?
Panos Agoros: We are a concept band. All our lyrics and aesthetics are influenced by cosmology, astronomy and sci-fi literature. Across our records we flesh out the mythos of Dephosphorus, an astral entity roaming the cosmos, probing for answers, and trying to solve existence’s riddle by recruiting new allies along the way. Sublimation is not a concept album per se, however a lot of the lyrics have been influenced by Iain M. Banks’ Sublimation concept (see the answer to the 1st question).

Friedhof Magazine: Which is the idea behind release the album under the cooperation of Selfmadegod (Poland), 7 Degrees Records and Nerve Altar (USA)?
Panos Agoros: The idea is to team up with some trustworthy partners who will do a good job in promoting and distributing the physical editions (LP/CD) of “Sublimation”. We’ve been working with 7 Degrees Records (Germany) for almost a decade now as they’ve released most of our records in vinyl. We have a close relationship with label owner Simon, who has become a friend over the years. Nerve Altar is carrying the LP in North America and we’ve already worked with them for the collaboration LP with Haapoja (Finland). N.A. owner Aaron Nichols is one of our gurus in the modern grind scene, as he has performed for legendary grind bands Defeatist and Kalibas. Last but not least, famous polish death/grind label Selfmadegod carries the Compact Death edition. A lot of our friends have been asking for CD’s forever, so we’ve obliged since our previous album “Impossible Orbits”, which was the start of our collaboration with SMG. Hopefully, our backcatalogue will follow at some point!

Friedhof Magazine: Do you plan to tour Europe after pandemia thing to support “Sublimation“? Maybe Spain in the radar?
Panos Agoros: Playing live and touring is complicated for us as our guitarist/songwriter Thanos Mantas lives in Sweden, while the rest of the band lives in Greece. However, once the pandemic is over we would be happy to play a few select dates or festivals abroad. So, if you would like to see Dephosphorus perform in Spain, make sure you drop a word to your local gig promoters. Salud!

Friedhof Magazine: Hoy estrenamos vuestro nuevo sencillo “Sublimation“. ¡Cuéntanos más sobre esta canción!
Panos Agoros: ¡Saludos! Es el tema que da nombre a nuestro 4º álbum y 2º extracto que se hará público (el primero es “Multiple-Dimension Descriptor”). Sus letras tratan del concepto de sublimación del autor de ciencia ficción Iain M. Banks, que ha inspirado su título, además de ser un tema unificador en la mayoría de las letras de las canciones del disco. Para resumir de qué se trata: las civilizaciones avanzadas que sublimen, están migrando de “lo real” a dimensiones más altas. La letra de la canción está escrita en griego, así como aproximadamente la mitad de las letras del álbum. Las traducciones se proporcionan online y dentro del CD/LP.

Friedhof Magazine: La canción da nombre a vuestro cuarto disco. ¿Qué dirección está tomando la música esta vez?
Panos Agoros: Tenemos nuestro propio estilo que es una mezcla de diferentes géneros de música extrema y pesada. A lo largo de nuestras grabaciones desde hace más de una década, nos hemos ceñido a él y por lo tanto no somos el tipo de banda de la que uno debería esperar grandes cambios de dirección musical de un álbum a otro. Sin embargo, esto no significa que nos estanquemos en una cierta fórmula. Hay cambios en nuestro sonido, interpretación y composición, pero preferimos que nuestro público, tanto el antiguo como el nuevo, lo descubra por sí mismo al escuchar el álbum.

Friedhof Magazine: ¿Qué temas aborda el nuevo álbum? ¿Tiene concepto?
Panos Agoros: Somos una banda conceptual. Todas nuestras letras y estéticas están influenciadas por la cosmología, la astronomía y la literatura de ciencia ficción. A través de nuestros discos desarrollamos el mito del Dephosphorus, una entidad astral que vaga por el cosmos, buscando respuestas, y tratando de resolver el enigma de la existencia reclutando nuevos aliados en el camino. “Sublimation” no es un álbum conceptual en sí mismo, sin embargo muchas de las letras han sido influenciadas por el concepto de sublimación de Iain M. Banks (ver la respuesta a la primera pregunta).

Friedhof Magazine:¿Cuál es la idea detrás de lanzar el álbum bajo la cooperación de Selfmadegod (Polonia), 7 Degrees Records y Nerve Altar (EE.UU.)?
Panos Agoros: La idea es formar un equipo con algunos socios de confianza que harán un buen trabajo en la promoción y distribución de las ediciones físicas (LP/CD) de “Sublimation”. Hemos estado trabajando con 7 Degrees Records (Alemania) durante casi una década ya que han editado la mayoría de nuestros discos en vinilo. Tenemos una estrecha relación con el dueño del sello, Simon, que se ha convertido en un amigo a lo largo de los años. Nerve Altar lleva el LP en Norteamérica y ya hemos trabajado con ellos para el LP de colaboración con Haapoja (Finlandia). El propietario de N.A., Aaron Nichols, es uno de nuestros gurús en la escena grind moderna, ya que ha trabajado para las legendarias bandas grind Defeatist y Kalibas. Por último, pero no menos importante, el famoso sello polaco de death/grind Selfmadegod lleva la edición CD. Muchos de nuestros amigos han estado pidiendo CD’s desde siempre, así que estamos obligados desde nuestro anterior álbum “Impossible Orbits”, que fue el comienzo de nuestra colaboración con SMG. ¡Esperamos que nuestro catálogo viejo le siga en algún momento!

Friedhof Magazine: ¿Planeáis hacer una gira por Europa después de la pandemia para apoyar a “Sublimation“? ¿Quizás España en el radar?
Panos Agoros: Tocar en directo y hacer giras es complicado para nosotros, ya que nuestro guitarrista/compositor Thanos Mantas vive en Suecia, mientras que el resto de la banda vive en Grecia. Sin embargo, una vez que la pandemia termine, estaremos encantados de tocar algunas fechas o festivales en el extranjero. Así que si queréis ver a Dephosphorus actuar en España, aseguraos de hablar con los promotores locales. ¡Salud!
